September 2026 Newsletter

Happy September!

We’re in the midst of everyone’s favorite month of the year here in Maine. What’s not to love about the clear blue skies, cooler weather, and the beginnings of autumn? This is the month for visiting local fairs that promote sustainability, harvest, and support the local economy. From the Fryeburg Fair to the Common Ground Fair there’s something for everyone — what will you be attending?

We’ve got a host of new classes lined up, and more. Be sure to read to the end for all of our updates.

Upcoming Workshops

Shape & Stitch Sweater Hyperbolic Crochet Wild Fibers Weaving

This season, Maine Fibershed has lined up a wonderful slate of hands-on workshops designed to build skills, spark creativity, and connect you with your community’s abundant resources. From up-cycling and mending to sweater design and traditional button-making, these programs offer members and and non-members practical ways to engage with fiber arts while supporting Maine's fiber and textile future.

Members get discounts on workshops! Sign up for membership here.

Shape & Stitch: A Sweater Design Workshop

This is a two-part class taking place on October 10 and October 17, in Belfast, ME.

Maine Fibershed Member price: $130

Non-Member price: $145

Flex your creative knitting muscles and go from “I knit sweaters” to “I design sweaters.” In this two‑part workshop, knitwear designer Reah Janise Kauffman will guide you through transforming that “someday sweater” idea into something you can actually cast on. This hands‑on class walks you through the full design process—from first sketch to a clear, knittable pattern.

Hyperbolic Crochet

October 11, Camden, ME

Maine Fibershed Member price: $30

Non-member price: $35

Learn to crochet an evocative and beautiful mathematical object called a hyperbolic plane. Whether you love math or think you hate it, this workshop is for everyone. No previous crochet experience needed. You’ll leave with your project well begun, and with instructions for finishing it.

Launch of Dyer’s Advisory Board

A note from Jude Hsiang, Versicolor LLC

Maine Fibershed members are involved in all parts of the Soil-to-Soil circle. Some are involved in every spoke of the wheel, while some are involved in one or two. We invite anyone involved in natural dyeing to join in the collaboration and education of the public about this ancient and continuing aspect of fiber craft.

Do you forage for plant, fungi, and lichen dyes? Dig for soil pigments? Do you have a dye garden? Sell dye plants or seeds from your farm? Do you raise flax or hemp? Do you harvest basketry fibers? Do you teach natural dyeing techniques?

Perhaps you also look beyond Maine for sources like tropical plants, insects, and mollusks not found here. Supporting dyers and other fiber folk around the world keeps these traditions alive as we spin, weave, knit, crochet, print, paint, and extend the exploration of natural pigments in new directions.

We encourage ethical sourcing and sharing knowledge of natural pigments to make our world more beautiful.

Interested in joining the Dyer’s Advisory Board? Please contact Jude Hsiang at versitext@gmail.com.
