What is a Fibershed?

A Fibershed is a geographical region where natural fiber is produced, processed, made into textiles and ultimately composted.

Maine Fibershed is nonprofit affiliate of the national Fibershed organization founded by Rebecca Burgess. By participating in the Fibershed affiliate program, we are part of an international grassroots network that promotes the development of regional fiber systems communities, including economic and non-economic growth, in the form of building relationships and new global networks.

Maine Fibershed develops regional fiber systems to create income equity and expand opportunities. Our goal is to implement climate beneficial agriculture, rebuild regional manufacturing, and educate the public about the benefits of soil-to-soil fiber and dye systems. Our programs are inspired by the desire to protect Maine’s natural resources, shorten supply chains, and create a common-ground community. 

Our mission is to teach stewardship of our land and resources, foster community and creativity, and facilitate conversations and strategies that address the challenges of a localized and widespread fiber supply chain.
