The Maine Fibershed Directory is a network of farmers, mill owners, natural dyers, sewists, weavers, knitters, spinners, designers, menders, upcyclers, composters and supporting businesses and organizations who live and work in Maine. 

Guidelines for joining the Maine Fibershed Directory

  • You are wholeheartedly aligned to the Fibershed vision of building a sustainable, reciprocal regional fiber system centered on Maine-grown fibers, dyes, and labor.  When needed, we will reach out to other Fibershed communities to obtain resources that are not available in Maine’s bioregion. 

  • Your work utilizes, or supplies fiber, dyes, and labor which are sourced anywhere within Maine, and/or  

  • Your work is keeping existing textiles in use and out of landfills. This may mean mending, upcycling, other creative use of textile scraps, and/or larger more robust recycling initiatives. 

If this describes you, please join! Together, we will create a community of producers, makers and consumers who actively support, cultivate, and participate in a circular textile community focused on care for Earth and her inhabitants.

  • Here are some examples of good fits for the Maine Fibershed. There are many others! 

    • You live in Maine and are a shepherd of fiber animals 

    • You sell Maine-grown raw fleece, yarn, skins, etc.  

    • You grow bast fibers on Maine soil 

    • You process fiber (felting, spinning, weaving, dyeing, etc.), either mechanized or hand-scale 

    • You create felt from locally grown fiber for personal, wholesale and/or retail sale 

    • You offer scouring services 

    • You grow dye plants 

    • You’re a shearer  

    • You are an upcycling teacher or retailer 

    • You are a cut-and-sew business  

    • You are a clothing designer looking to create a regional product line with Maine yarns and fiber  

    • You are an interior designer who wishes to use felted wool for noise reduction, air filtration, and/or window treatment insulation 

    • You are a builder wishing to use waste wool for insulation 

    • You offer mending services 

    • You have farming and land management experience, and you offer services to help shepherds and farmers shift their practices towards Climate Beneficial practices 

  • If your goal is to move toward selling a line of Maine Fibershed-member produced goods, you can connect with our producers and makers through the directory, and begin a dialog with the Maine Fibershed team who is supporting this endeavor.  

  • No need to join the Directory. However, Maine Fibershed can support you with programs, resources, and a community of teachers that can help you create a Fiber Activist curriculum, teach the meaning and importance of a local Fibershed, help local farms and dye gardeners, teach and teach handcrafts that range from hyperbolic crochet to spinning, weaving, knitting, mending and upcycling. Bring us your ideas! 

  • Joining the directory is $30, renewable on an annual basis.

    This fee helps us maintain our website platforms, pay administrative costs to add you to the ArcGIS network, and personnel time to connect you with relevant partners.

Why join?

  • Promotion via Directory: Your name and contact information will be displayed on our official Maine Fibershed Directory and available to other Fibershed Affiliates worldwide. The name of your business, contact information and your logo will be included. Your section on our website, alongside your photo/logo & name.

  • Promotion via Map Directory: Your same basic contact information above will also be shown on an interactive MapBox. The Maine Fibershed MapBox will become part of the Fibershed.org worldwide map.

  • Promotion via Social Media: As Directory Members join, we will announce on our Facebook accounts (Maine Fibershed and Maine Fibershed Community) and Instagram.

  • Grant and Funding Opportunities: Where applicable, Directory members will be made aware of funding that Maine Fibershed is pursuing and/or that other organizations have opened.

  • Your Event Promotion: Send us a list of any public events (farm sale, workshops, etc.), and we’ll put them on our official website calendar as a “Producer Event”

  • Producer Spotlight: A “Producer Spotlight” section on our Blog page and newsletter after you join.

  • Connecting Meetings: Invitation to Annual Maine Fibershed Directory Member Meeting (via Zoom), November 2026 launch date.

  • Private Section on our Online Platform: Coming in November 2026,

  • Events: First-access to teach Maine Fibershed programs, host events at your location, or be part of Maine Fibershed attended programs

  • Official Maine Fibershed Member logo use on your promotions.

  • Promotional Material: Maine Fibershed promotional materials, including free online templates, and paper-based materials at cost.
